Reports have been received that Panamanian flag vessel XIN HAI ZHOU 2 (8,461gt, built 2008) ran aground earlier today between Ishigaki Islands and Kohama, Okinawa Prefecture.
The vessel’s crew has been rescued by the Japanese Coast Guard. Presently the vessel is being monitored in case of possible pollution.
It is possible that claims for salvage and/or general average will be brought against cargo insurers as a result of this incident.
Prior to the accident the vessel had sailed from Dumai on 08 January, having previously called in Malaysia and Thailand.
