Reports have been received that Netherlands flag vessel SYRACUSA (3,237gt, built 2008) sustained a significant crack and buckled amidships while unloading a cargo of salt at the Akzo Nobel Polymer Chemicals Berth in Rotterdam yesterday morning.

As a result, the vessel suffered seawater ingress and efforts are underway by the fire brigade and port services to pump water out of the vessel to prevent it from sinking.

The crane ship HEBO CAT 9 also attended to stabilize the vessel. It is possible that the load was too heavy, which caused the accident. Fortunately, no injuries or pollution were reported.
