Malaysia to Italy
Combined chemical and oil tanker STRINDA (11,729 gt, built 2006) is currently en route to Mokha, Yemen.
The vessel, having sailed from Kampang Tanjung Langsat on 27 July 2023, was hit by an anti-ship cruise missile earlier today.
No injuries were reported, but the tanker suffered damage, and had to be diverted, under guard, to a port of refuge.
This is the latest of several recent attacks on shipping in the area, and as before has been attributed to Houthi militia based in Yemen.
Houthi sources claimed that STRINDA was en route to deliver at an Israeli terminal, although the vessel’s Norwegian operators have stated that in fact the vessel is carrying palm oil to Italy.
It remains to be seen whether the ship owners will elect to declare general average.
