Reports have been received that Madeira flag vessel NORTHERN JUVENILE (94,419gt, built 2009) suffered a fire on board on 27 May2024, whilst in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia.
Initial reports suggested that the crew were about to abandon the vessel, although it was later reported that the fire had been brought under control.
The ship owners have had to agree a Lloyd’s Open Form (LOF) salvage contract and a rescue operation is underway. It is also likely that the General Average (GA) will be declared.
Cargo insurers will be asked to provide security before cargoes can be delivered.
NORTHERN JUVENILE is a containership on a west bound voyage from ports in Malaysia and China. Before the accident, the vessel had called at:
