Sinking following water ingress
Voyage
Malaysia to Bangladesh
Reports have been received that the MV Sealloyd Arc experienced massive water ingress while underway approximately three nautical miles south of Cape Phromthept, Phuket, Thailand, on 7 February 2026, resulting in a heavy list and distress situation.
It is understood that the water ingress could not be controlled, and the vessel subsequently capsized and sank in the Andaman Sea. All 16 crew members were successfully evacuated without injury, initially rescued by a nearby fishing vessel and later transferred to a Thai naval vessel before being landed safely at Chalong Bay.
At the time of the incident, the vessel was reported to be carrying approximately 290 to 297 containers, including 14 containers containing hazardous substances. As the vessel listed, numerous containers fell overboard, with some sinking and others remaining afloat and drifting over a wide area, creating a significant hazard to navigation. An aerial survey conducted after the sinking detected an oil slick approximately 4.5 miles long and one mile wide drifting westward from the wreck site. Authorities confirmed that no oil had reached the Phuket coastline at the time of reporting.
The Royal Thai Navy and Maritime Enforcement Command initiated a large-scale emergency response, including deployment of patrol vessels, aircraft, and naval divers. Navigational warnings were issued, and cardinal and isolated danger markers were installed around floating debris. Environmental monitoring and pollution response measures were activated, and an investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing.
The vessel’s last reported position before sinking was in the vicinity of Cape Phromthept, Phuket, while proceeding on a southbound voyage from Malaysia to Bangladesh.
