Type
Fatalities and Container Explosion

Reports have been received that MV Kyparissia experienced a fire and subsequent explosion on board while berthed at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Malaysia, on 7 November 2025. Initial reports confirm that the incident occurred in the under-hatch area of Block 5 during unloading operations and tragically resulted in three fatalities and three injuries among crew and attending personnel.

Further reports confirm that the explosion originated from a single container, and that the vessel had already experienced smoke and fire one day earlier after departing PTP, prompting a return to port for emergency assistance.

It is understood that the fire has been extinguished, and the vessel remains alongside at PTP under the control of the relevant authorities. No hazardous or toxic gas was released, and the affected area remains secured. Port operations were temporarily suspended but have since resumed.

General Average has been declared and all cargo interests will be required to provide GA security before cargo can be released.

The vessel’s last port of call before the incident was Tanjung Pelepas, reportedly destined for Lomé, Togo, following its westbound routing.
