Reports have been received that Brazilian flag vessel MONTE SARMIENTO (69,132gt, built 2005) experienced an engine room on 23 June 2023.
At the time the vessel, a containership, was on a voyage from Itapoa to Paranagua. The crew were unable to extinguish the fire and salvage tug SVITZER CAROLINA has been sent to assist.
No injuries have been reported. But the fire has spread to containers stowed on the aft stacks, adjacent to the engine room.
MONTE SARMIENTO trades between ports in Brazil but is likely to also be carrying transhipment cargoes to and from other countries as well.
