Type
Grounding

Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel LIQUID GEM (4,240gt, built 2015) ran aground on a breakwater at the port of Taichung, Taiwan, on 07 December 2024.

Local Authorities said that the vessel dragged its anchor and that a search is underway for a missing crew member, who is a 47-year-old Chinese national.

The vessel had drifted in bad weather before grounding on the breakwater 500 metres from shore, developing a list to port.

Police reported twelve seafarers were airlifted to safety, but three had jumped overboard, fearing the tanker might capsize. Two were later rescued and were reported to be uninjured.

The National Airborne Service Corps continues to search for the missing crew member.

Oil containment booms have been placed around the tanker as a precaution.
