Reports have been received that Italian flag vessel GRANDE CONGO (25,682gt, built 2010), that suffered a fire on board last week, is now berthed at Newport News, with cargo salvage efforts underway.
The vessel encountered heavy weather on 16 and 17 February, leading to a shift in the vehicles stowed on deck no. 3, and subsequently a fire.
GRANDE CONGO had sailed from Valencia on 10 February 2025, destined for Baltimore. The vessel diverted to Newport News as a port of refuge after the fire broke out.
