Fuel oil identified in cargo holds / General Average
Reports have been received that NAVIOS VERMILION was alongside at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, carrying out discharge operations on 25 August 2026 when fuel oil was identified in the cargo holds.
It is understood that the vessel remained berthed and salvage operations involving affected containers commenced. The vessel owners subsequently declared General Average. Cargo interests may therefore be required to provide Average Bonds and insurers’ Average Guarantees before their cargo can be released.
Ocean Network Express Holdings, Ltd. (ONE) advised that containers and cargo were being retained pending the necessary General Average arrangements. Public AIS information in early September continued to show NAVIOS VERMILION moored at Rio de Janeiro.
As at 7 September 2026, Mediterranean Average Adjusting Company had been appointed as Average Adjusters and Albatross Adjusters as collecting agents. Cargo interests are being required to arrange the necessary General Average security and supporting documents for cargo release.
The cause and source of the fuel oil found in the cargo holds have not presently been confirmed in the information available to us.
