Date: 21 October 2021   Type: Collision   Voyage: Sweden/UK

Reports have been received that Antigua and Barbuda flag vessel KONSTANTIN (2,997gt, built 2009) was in collision with Italian flag vessel SMERALDO (4,896gt, built 1998) at Brunsbuttel yesterday.

Chemical tanker SMERALDO is on a voyage from Netherlands to Germany. Reportedly, the incident happened during the anchoring manoeuvre of KONSTANTIN, on a voyage from Sweden to the UK, when it drifted into the tanker and suffered water ingress into the engine room.

SMERLADO was ONLY slightly damaged at its superstructure. The Central Command for Maritime Emergencies in Cuxhaven sent the multipurpose ship NEUWERK and two tugs FAIRPLAY 54 and WOLF to the incident location.

KOSTANTIN was apparently in danger of sinking and berthed in the Elbe Port of Brunsbuttel where attempts were being made to stabilize the vessel.
