Two ships capsized and three others have been damaged after Typhoon Gaemi hit Taiwan yesterday.
TERRA NOVA – Capsize (pictured above)
Philippines flag product tanker TERRA NOVA (498gt, built 2002) capsized in rough seas off the Philippines.
A rescue operation was begun to locate one missing crew member, although latest reports suggest that he may have lost his life.
And an oil spill response effort was also launched.
FU SHUN – Capsize
Tanzania flag general cargo ship FU SHUN (198gt built, built 1985) capsized with nine Myanmar crew reported to be on board the elderly vessel.
Three other vessels ran aground during the storm. These were:
Indonesia flag bulk cement carrier IRIANA (7,757gt, built 2017) ran aground in Pingtung. The Taiwan coastguard reported that all 20 crew were safe and there was no risk of pollution. IRIANA had been at anchor after sailing from Kaohsiung on 19 July.
Madeira flag containership AS SOPHIA (18,123gt, built 2007), ran aground off the coast of Taiwan. The vessel had sailed from Shanghai yesterday.
Mongolia flag vessel BASIA (2,798gt, built 2004) ran aground, also off Pingtung.
