Reports have been received that Palau flag vessel MKK 1 (9,815gt, built 1992) ran aground at Umuryeri point in the Istanbul Strait earlier today.
The bulk carrier is on a voyage from Yuzhnyi carrying a cargo of peas. Salvage operations have yet to commence but several vessels and a dive team are in attendance.
The incident happened after MKK 1 reportedly suffered a technical failure. Strait passage was temporarily cancelled as a result of the accident.
