Reports have been received that the vehicle carrier “MIN JIANG KOU” suffered an engine room fire on 6 August 2026 whilst approximately 630 miles south of Costa Rica.
It is understood that the crew activated the vessel’s fixed CO₂ fire suppression system, which initially contained the fire. However, smoke subsequently increased and the Master ordered the crew to abandon the vessel. All 22 crew members were safely rescued by the bulk carrier JIN HAI PING, with the tanker DEGU also assisting.
The latest reports indicate that arrangements are being coordinated with Resolve Marine for the recovery of the vessel and further repairs. The extent of any damage to the cargo has not yet been confirmed.
The vessel’s last port of call before the accident was Shanghai, China, destined for Manta, Ecuador.
In addition to possible cargo damage, claims for salvage and General Average may arise as a result of this incident.
