Reports have been received that Marshall Islands flag vessel TRADE (32,287gt, built 2011) suffered a fire on board yesterday whilst berthed at the Amsterdam Scrap Terminal.

The fire originated in a shipment of scrap metal in the hold of the vessel, which was in the process of being loaded at the time.

No injuries have been reported but the fire triggered a significant smoke release, which quickly spread across parts of Amsterdam.

The fire brigade responded and has sent numerous units to the scene. The blaze is being fought from both the shore and the from the sea, with the support of fire boats.

A diving team from the fire brigade has been placed on standby as a precautionary measure and, to locate and monitor the fire’s seat, a police helicopter was deployed.

The Port of Amsterdam port authority is also assisting in the firefighting efforts. A specialist unit for fighting shipboard fires was dispatched from the Rotterdam region to assist further.
