Reports have been received that Singapore flag vessel MAERSK SANA (93,511gt, built 2004) suffered an explosion on board on 28 April 2025 whilst off the east coast of the US.

The explosion was in the vessel’s engine room. Three crew members are reported to have suffered severe injuries as a result.

MAERSK SANA, a container vessel, has been adrift for the last two days.

Prior to the incident the vessel had called at Newark, from where it sailed on 26 April 2025. Before this the vessel had called at Savannah, Charleston and Lazaro Gardenas.

MAERSK SANA is also believed to be carrying cargoes originally shipped out of China, Vietnam and other countries in the Far East. The vessel had called at Yangshan, Meishan, Lach Huyen, Zhoushan, Nansha and Tanjung Pelepas.
