Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel GRANDE BRASILE (56,660gt built 2000) suffered a fire on board today off the coast of southern England.

The general cargo vessel, with 28 people on board, issued a Mayday call while transiting the southwest-bound lane of the Dover Strait TSS, approximately 15 nautical miles southeast of Ramsgate.

The vessel requested firefighting assistance. The UK Coastguard is coordinating a response. The vessel is carrying containers and cars, though exact quantities were unknown.

Prior to this incident GRANDE BRASILE had sailed from Antwerp earlier today. The vessel usually trades between Europe and ports in West Africa.
