Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel MSC BALTIC III (25,407gt, built 2003) ran aground on 15 February 2025 off Newfoundland, Canada.

The container vessel, on a voyage from Montreal to Corner Brook, reportedly suffered a power failure before grounding in a location known as Cedar Grove.

Emergency services responded quickly and the vessel’s crew were taken off the vessel. There are some reports of in injuries to crew members.

The incident occurred during a period of severe weather, with wave heights up to a six metres. MSC BALTIC III had dropped anchor but this was not sufficient to prevent the vessel running aground on the rocky shoreline.

Once weather conditions improve the condition of the vessel will be further assessed and salvage options considered. No pollution has been noticed thus far.

MSC BALTIC III has on board approximately 400 containers. Prior to arriving in Canada, the vessel had called at ports in Bahamas, USA and Mexico.
