Reports have been received that South Korean flag vessel HMM TACOMA (72,982gt, built 2009) suffered a fire on board on 29 December 2024.

The containership was sailing through the Mozambique Channel when a fire broke out in hold no 7. The crew took steps to fight the fire and outside assistance was also provided.

The vessel then sailed towards Ngqura as a port of refuge and remains anchored off shore at this time.

Prior to the fire HMM TACOMA had loaded cargoes at Nhava Sheva in India, having previously called at ports in Pakistan and China. The next scheduled port of call was to be Algeciras, Spain.

It is possible that general average and salvage claims will be made against cargo insurers as a result of this incident.

It is also clear that part of the cargo on board will be damaged by fire and water.
