Reports have been received that a fire broke out on board Hong Kong flag containership MAERSK CINCINNATI (155,811gt, built 2024) earlier this week.
We understand that the incident began around midnight South African time on 15 September 2024. Flames were observed coming from one of the cargo holds.
The vessel’s owners have engaged fire fighters, possibly professional salvors, to provide assistance. At present the vessel remains off the South African coast, near Richards Bay.
Prior to this MAERSK CINCINNATI had called at Colombo, Tanjung Pelepas, Yantian, Nansha and Yangshan. The next schedule port of call was to be Tanger Med.
This incident represents the latest in several containership fires over recent weeks and months, the most significant being NORTHERN JUVENILE, MAERSK FRANKFURT and YM MOBILITY.
