Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel YM MOBILITY (76,787gt, built 2011) suffered a huge explosion on board earlier today, whilst at Ningbo.
Early indications are that a container on board exploded. There are no reports of casualties at this time.
YM MOBILITY is berthed at Ningbo Phase 3 Terminal. Large clouds of smoke can be seen coming from the containership.
The Ningbo Maritime Search and Rescue Centre has initiated an emergency plan. Three fire-fighting tugs and shore-based fire-fighters have been deployed.
Prior to this incident the vessel had sailed from Shanghai (07 August), Jebel Ali (22 July), Hamad (20 July) and Umm Qasr (19 July).
It is possible that general average will be declared as a result of this incident. There will also of course be some damage to cargoes on board.
