Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel HELLENIC SEA (36448gt built 1991) required salvage assistance after suffering water ingress on the Amazon River last month.
The bulk carrier, carrying a cargo of bauxite, had sailed from Trombetas on 16th July. Reportedly, she made contact with an underwater object after taking evasive action to avoid another vessel.
Professional Salvors Five Oceans Salvage were engaged on a Lloyd’s Open Form salvage contract. The owners/insurers of the cargo therefore have to provide salvage security.
It is also likely that General Average will be declared. At this time we understand that the vessel is still in Brazil.
