Reports have been received that Panama flag vessel MEDEA K (9529gt built 1978) has been abandoned by hew crew in the Atlantic after the vessel developed a list.
The incident apparently took place a few weeks ago. The vessel originally sailed from Santos, Brazil in August and was destined for Mauritania.
Salvors have now been contracted to rescue the ship and cargo and a salvage operation is underway off the coast of Gabon.
If the salvage operation is successful then the insurers of the cargo on board will be required to provide salvage security. It is also likely that general average will be declared.
