Date: 21 June 2022   Type: Fire and explosion   Voyage: USA/Europe/Middle East

Reports have been received that a fire broke out in the engine room of Panamanian flag vessel MSC RACHELE (90745gt, built 2005) yesterday whilst the vessel was between Naples and Fos Sur Mer.

The French Authorities and Navy responded to reports of a fire and explosion aboard and coordinated a medical evacuation of three crew members, including two who are reported to be in serious condition.

Reports are that the fire was followed by an explosion. An assessment team was dispatched to the vessel to determine the status of the vessel and cargo. The first teams aboard reported that the fire appeared to be under control but that the vessel is without power.

Prior to arriving in the Mediterranean, MSC RACHELE, a containership, had called in the Bahamas and ports on the US East Coast.
