Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel SAMUS SWAN (4,001gt, built 2009) suffered a fire/explosion in the engine room on 11 September 2021.

The fire was quickly extinguished but the main engine was not in a condition where it could be safely started without first conducting a detailed assessment.

Two casualties were reported during the incident one of whom was taken ashore by helicopter and is reported to be in a stable condition.

SAMUS SWAN was drifting south of Sicily with a tug planned to arrive yesterday afternoon.
