Reports have been received that Isle of Man flag vessel BERGE YOTEI (36,400gt, built 2020) suffered a fire and explosion on board recently whilst off the coast of Chile.
The bulk carrier is diverting into the Chilean port of Talcahuano where damage will be assessed. Early indications are that the explosion damaged a hatch cover, suggesting that the explosion may have been in a cargo hold.
BERGE YOTEI is on a voyage from San Lorenzo in Argentina. The vessel is carrying a cargo of soybeans and had sailed from San Lorenzo on 23 April 2021.
There will also be general average expenses incurred, but it not yet clear whether general average will be declared.
