Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel HANJIN ITALY (114,144gt, built 2011) was in collision with Marshall Islands flag vessel AL GHARRAFA (136,410gt built 2008) on 28th December 2013 near Singapore.
As a result, the container vessel suffered water ingress into two of her holds causing damage to the cargo in those holds. Several containers were also lost overboard.
HANJIN ITALY requires salvage assistance as a result of the accident and the vessel is now anchored off Singapore where assistance is being provided.
The vessel was on an east bound voyage from Europe at the time of the accident. She was due to call at ports in China and Korea. She is likely to be carrying transhipment cargoes for other parts of the world as well.
The owners of HANJIN ITALY have declared General Average. Cargo insurers are required to provide guarantees before the cargo is delivered.
