Reports have been received that Antigua flag vessel HANSE CONFIDENCE (9,701gt built 2005) has collided with Luxembourg flag vessel CHARLOTTA (17,600gt built 2008) today.
The accident took place off Hamburg. HANSE CONFIDENCE suffered severe water ingress as a result. The engine room and surrounding spaces were flooded and around 100 men attended to prevent the vessel from capsizing.
Cargo has been removed from the stern of the vessel which has been pushed by tugs against the quay at Eurogate in an effort to stabilise the situation. CHARLOTTA is also severely damaged.
Both vessels trade for the most part in the Baltic Sea but are likely to have cargoes on board for other parts of the world as well.
It is possible that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board HANSE CONFIDENCE. It is also possible that general average will be declared by either or both vessels involved.
