Date: 27.10.09     Type: Collision     Voyage: Japan/Korea/Japan but cargo worldwide

Reports have been received that South Korean flag vessel CARINA STAR (7401gt built 1998) has today collided with Japanese Navy destroyer JS KURAMA off the coast of Japan.

This was a major incident and both vessels are understood to be on fire. One crew member has been injured. Damage to the cargo ship CARINA STAR is expected to be extensive.

CARINA STAR operates between ports in Japan and South Korea. Her last reported port of call was Kobe from where she sailed 23rd October. It is likely that at least some of the cargo on board will be for transhipment to ports outside of Japan and Korea.

It is clear that cargo damage will have been suffered as a result of this incident. It is also quite possible that the insurers of the cargo on board will also be asked to provide salvage and or general average guarantees.
