Date: 29 August 2024 Type: Cargoes Lost Overboard Voyage: UAE/Pakistan/India/Sri Lanka/USA
Reports have been received that Liberian flag vessel MSC ANTONIA (76,486gt, built 2008) lost 46 containers overboard on Thursday last week, off the coast of South Africa.
The accident occurred when the containership met the heavy seas which are notorious in this area, and is the latest of several shipping casualties off the South African coast over recent weeks and months.
A greater number of vessels have been following this west bound route recently, their operators having decided to avoid Suez transit and the associated risks of passing the coast of Yemen.
MSC ANTONIA is now off Mossel Bay. It is possible that the vessel will have to come into a port of refuge, possibly Cape Town, to check container lashings before the voyage to the US continues.
Prior to this incident MSC ANTONIA had called at Colombo, Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Muhammad Bin Qasim and Mina Khalifa.
