Date: 19 July 2024   Type: Fire   Voyage: From Malaysia/Pakistan/India

*****First Report*****

Reports have been received that Panamanian flag vessel MAERSK FRANKFURT (58,100gt, built 2024) caught fire in position lat 14 11 50N, long 073 05 50E today.

Vessels in the vicinity were requested to assist if possible, and report to MRCC Mumbai.

We understand the vessel was en route Colombo, Sri Lanka, and has now altered course, heading back east towards the Indian coast.

MAERSK FRANKFURT is only a few months old, having been launched in Japan earlier this year.

The vessel had called at ports in Malaysia, India and Pakistan, before the fire broke out.

*****Second Report*****

The fire on board MAERSK FRANKFURT has now largely been brought under control, although the Indian Coast Guard and other emergency services are still in attendance.

It was reported over the weekend that one crew member lost his life in the accident.

The vessel was on its maiden voyage, having been launched from Japan earlier this year, and was scheduled to call at Colombo. There is also transhipment cargo on board destined for other parts of the world.

The vessel’s owners have declared General Average (GA). This means that cargo insurers are being asked to provide average guarantees before cargoes can be delivered.
