Date: 12 March 2024   Type: Piracy   Voyage: Mozambique to UAE

Reports have been received that Bangladeshi flag vessel ABDULLAH (32,714gt, built 2015) was hijacked by pirates yesterday.

The bulk carrier was attacked by around armed 20 assailants, believed to be from Somalia, when sailing about 600 miles east of Mogadishu.

ABDULLAH is a on a voyage from Maputo in Mozambique to Hamriyah, UAE, carrying a cargo of 55,000mt of coal.

The crew of 23 Bangladeshis were reported to have taken refuge in the vessel’s citadel.

Commonly a vessel and crew are held to ransom and this will often lead to a claim for general average against the insurers of the cargo on board a hijacked vessel.

It remains to be seen however how matters will develop over the coming days.
