Reports have been received that Panamanian flag vessel GENIUS STAR XI (9,984gt, built 2012) suffered a fire on board two days ago. The fire, which is still burning, is in a cargo hold.
The general cargo vessel is carrying lithium-ion batteries, is on a voyage from Haiphong, Vietnam to San Diego, USA.
No injuries or pollution have been reported. GENIUS STAR XI was approximately 225 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, when the fire was first reported.
The vessel is deviating towards Dutch Harbor where a decision will be made in liaison with the US authorities as to how best to contain the situation.
