Date: 20 July 2023 Type: Water Ingress Voyage: India/Sri Lanka/China
Reports have been received that Palau flag vessel ANGEL (16,145gt, built 2003) suffered sea water ingress earlier today whilst anchored off Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The incident forced the crew to temporarily evacuate the vessel. It had arrived in Taiwanese waters and anchored about 2.8 nautical miles from shore around two weeks ago.
The vessel, a containership, began taking on water and developed a list of about eight degrees. Out of concern for the crew’s safety, the captain ordered all nineteen crew members to leave the vessel.
The Coast Guard dispatched patrol boats and assisted with bringing the crew members to shore by 1235 hrs local time today. One of the crew members reportedly received medical treatment.
Six containers fell into the sea, and the port authorities declared Kaohsiung First Harbor closed. Vessels are currently entering and exiting normally from the Second Harbor entrance.
Oil booms are being deployed and two tugboats were dispatched to tow the vessel and prevent it from sinking.
Prior to arriving off Kaohsiung, ANGEL had made the following calls:
Dayoo Bay: 25 June
Hong Kong: 19 June
Colombo: 08 June
Mundra: 24 May
