Sixth Casualty Report

ONE APUS remains berthed at the port of Kobe where the vessel has been for over two months.

It is hoped however that the vessel will sail in the two or three days. ONE APUS should therefore arrive at the next scheduled port of call, Los Angeles, towards the end of March.

Much of the cargo that survived the catastrophic cargo loss at the end of November last year has been back loaded on to ONE APUS, some of it after having been cross-stuffed into replacement containers. Other cargo will go forward on board different vessels.

ONE APUS lost approximately 1,800 containers in heavy seas in the Pacific in November and many other cargoes on board were damaged.

Fifth Casualty Report

ONE APUS remains at the port of Kobe. The containership has been in port since early December 2020 to discharge and tranship cargoes following the catastrophic loss of containers overboard at the end of November.

Because of conditions on board and the safety concerns, discharge of the cargoes is taking considerably more time that would normally be the case.

Some of the cargoes are having to be cross-stuffed into new containers before they can be carried to destination. Other cargoes are seriously damaged.

Dolphin Maritime represents the insurers of part of the cargo on board the vessel and will be assisting with recovery.

Fourth Casualty Report

ONE APUS remains at the port of Kobe. The vessel arrived in the port a little under one month ago following catastrophic cargo losses in heavy seas at the end of November. ONE APUS was en route to the US but decided to turn round and head back to the vessel’s home country.

Discharge of the cargoes at Kobe is proceeding. But progress is slow because of the collapse of several bays of cargo on deck. As well as the approximately 1,800 containers lost overboard, many cargoes remaining on board are likely to have been damaged. Around 200 damaged containers have been discharged so far.

There have been rumours that general average will be declared. But this does not appear to have happened as yet, no doubt partly because of the huge cost of processing a general average claim when there are so many cargoes involved.

Third Casualty Report

ONE APUS remains at the port of Kobe having arrived there as a port of refuge a little under two weeks ago.

It is expected that cargo operations will continue for some time, perhaps until the middle of January 2021. Removal of containers from collapsed stows is of course more time consuming than if the containers were still intact.

The containership lost over 1,800 containers overboard in heavy seas in the Pacific at the end of November.

As can be seen from the photographs taken on board by the crew and on arrival in Kobe, damaged to cargo, particularly on deck, is also likely to be extensive.

Dolphin Maritime already represents insurers of part of the cargo on ONE APUS. We have extensive experience of dealing with container ship casualties for cargo insurers, particularly following incidents of this nature, recent examples being the YANTIAN EXPRESS and MSC ZOE.

We also have surveyors ready to assist in Kobe and at the various cargo destinations, as may be required.

The cargo loss on board ONE APUS is the most significant since the loss of the vessel MOL COMFORT several years ago, a case in which Dolphin Maritime was also heavily involved for cargo insurers.

Second Casualty Report

Following the significant loss of cargoes overboard in the Pacific last week, containership ONE APUS has diverted to Kobe in Japan where the vessel arrived today.

At Kobe a full damage assessment will be undertaken. The vessel’s operators have reported that 1,816 containers were lost overboard, the largest loss of containerised cargoes since the vessel MOL COMFORT sank several years ago.

Initial Casualty Report

Reports have been received that Japanese flag vessel ONE APUS (146,694gt, built 2019) is diverting to a port of refuge following cargo loss during heavy weather in the North Pacific yesterday.

The containership reportedly lost several containers overboard whilst sailing approximately 1,600 north west of Hawaii, en route to Long Beach.

The vessel’s last port of call was Yantian from where it sailed on 19 November 2020. Prior to this ONE APUS called at Hong Kong, Cai Mep, Vung Tao and Laem Chabang.
