Reports have been received that Danish flagged vessel LAURA MAERSK (50,688gt, built 2001) suffered an explosion on board on 4th June 2020.
The explosion is understood to have been in the vessel’s engine room. A member of the crew was injured as a result and has been airlifted to hospital in the US.
At the time the vessel was around 275 miles off the coast of North Carolina on west bound trans-Atlantic voyage number 020W.
Reports indicate that the vessel is presently disabled as a result of the accident but it is not yet clear whether outside assistance will be required.
The containership was originally scheduled to transit the Panama Canal and call at ports in Ecuador and Colombia.
LAURA MAERSK’s last port of call was Algeciras, Spain, from where she sailed on 27 May 2020. Prior to this the vessel had called at Yarimca, Ambarli, Novorossiysk and Yuzhnyy.
