Date: 25th May 2020    Type: Fire   Voyage: Malaysia/South Africa/China/Taiwan;

Reports have been received that Hong Kong flag vessel COSCO SAO PAULO (40,465gt, built 2013) experienced a fire in one of its holds off Cape Agulhas, South Africa, on 25 May 2020.

The fire has been extinguished but it is unclear how much damage has been caused. The vessel spent several hours anchored off Cape Town’s Atlantic seafront with rescue teams standing by to evacuate the crew if necessary.

Reportedly, the containership also developed a list and was seen to be rolling in bad weather conditions. The vessel remains at Cape Town as of today.

COSCO SAO PAULO is on a liner service and had previously called at Port Klang, from where it sailed on 4 May, and Durban, from where it sailed on 22 May. The vessel is destined for ports in China and Taiwan.
