Date: 28th September 2019 Type: Explosion and Fire Voyage: From Japan to S Korea;
Reports have been received that Cayman Islands flag product tanker STOLT GROENLAND (25881 gt, built 2009), on a voyage from Kobe to Ulsan, suffered an explosion on board at Ulsan on 28 September 2019.
This was followed by a major fire which spread to Singapore flag vessel BOW DALIAN (6,583 gt, built 2012) which was moored alongside.
The twenty-five Russian and Filipino crew members of STOLT GROENLAND were reported as safe and assembled on shore. In addition, the twenty-one crew members from BOW DALIAN were evacuated.
Reportedly, 10 people were injured, most of them being workers at the terminal.
Coast Guard and local authorities responded to the incident and BOW DALIAN was towed to safety, and the fire largely extinguished. One of BOW DALIAN’S crew members suffered slight injuries while tackling the fire.
