Date: June 2019 Type: Heavy Weather/ Collapse of stow Voyage: Asian Ports to Europe;
Reports have been received that Gibraltar flag vessel BOW DIAMOND (6,204gt built 2001) experienced heavy weather in the Gulf of Aden on 18/19 June 2019.
As a result, containerized cargo in hold no. 1 shifted and the stow collapsed causing structural damage to several containers.
As a consequence, a considerable number of cargoes of different explosives spilled in the hold. Fearing an explosion on board, the shipowners decided to order the vessel to a port of refuge. Although this took some time, BOW DIAMOND was eventually permitted to enter Ain Sokhna, Egypt.
After the vessel arrived in port, and the situation on board was assessed by experts, the shipowners decided to enter into an LOF salvage contract with Five Oceans Salvage. General Average has also been declared.
At present, the ship and cargo remain at AIN SOKHNA where work on the vessel is still underway. Cargo insurers will be asked to provide general average and salvage security before cargoes can be delivered.
