Reports have been received Antiguan flag vessel BBC SHANGHAI (4,090gt built 2001) suffered a main engine failure earlier today off East London, South Africa.
We understand that salvage tugs have been despatched to tow the vessel into a port of refuge.
It is possible that a salvage claim will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo on board. It is also likely that general average will be declared.
BBC SHANGHAI is understood to be destined for Nigeria. Prior to the incident she had called at Durban, Mtwara and Chennai.
