Date: September 2015 Type: Explosion/Fire Voyage: China to Philippines
Reports have been received that Marshall Islands flag vessel CAPE MORETON (27,786gt, built 2005) suffered an explosion and fire on board last month whilst at Manila.
No casualties were reported. General average has been declared. We already represent insurers of part of the cargo on board the vessel.
The fire was in the vessel’s cargo holds. Amongst the cargoes in these holds was sodium hydroxide. The fire was eventually extinguished by local salvors.
As well as the damage suffered by cargo, cargo owners/insurers are being asked to provide general average security.
Average guarantees will only be accepted by the Average Adjusters if the insurer of the cargo has a credit rating of BBB- or higher from a widely recognised credit rating agency.
As part of the claims handling process, we can arrange guarantees for cargo insurers that do not have this credit rating.
