Date: 6th October 2015 Type: Collision Voyage: Belgium to Spain
Reports have been received that Netherlands flag vessel FLINTERSTAR (6,577gt, built 2002) was in collision today with Marshall Islands flag vessel AL ORAIQ (136,685gt, built 2008) off the port of Zeebrugge.
As a result, FLINTERSTAR, on a voyage from Antwerp to Bilbao, is reported to be sinking but may in fact be resting on a sand bank. So far three crew members are reported rescued by LNG carrier AL ORAIQ. Tugs are on the scene.
Assuming cargoes can be retrieved from FLINTERSTAR, it is likely the salvage claims will be made against the owners/insurers of the cargo. Some cargo is expected to be damaged.
It is also likely that General Average will be declared.
