Date: 15.10.09     Type: Hijacking     Voyage: Far East to East Africa

Reports have been received that Singapore flag vessel KOTA WAJAR (16772gt built 1997) has been hijacked by Somali based pirates off the Seychelles.

This vessel is the first cargo ship taken by Somali pirates for some time. The containership, on a voyage from Far Eastern ports to Mombasa, will be taken to the Somali coast where the ship, cargo and the crew will be held to ransom.

The vessel’s last loading port was Shanghai from where she sailed on 28th September. Previously she had called in Malaysia and Taiwan.

It is possible that much of the cargo on board is intended for transhipment on other vessels to destinations around the world.

Once the ransom is paid, it is likely that the owners of the vessel will seek to claim contributions from the cargo owners and insurers as a claim in general average.

We are already handling several other piracy claims on behalf of cargo insurers. If you have insured cargo on board this vessel and require our assistance then please contact us as soon as possible.
