Reports have been received that Madeira flag vessel AKACIA (11,662gt, built 2004), allided with the Great Northern Lock on the Kiel Canal yesterday.
The containership has reportedly caused severe damage and has also suffered water ingress as a result of a hull breach.
Investigations are underway. It has been suggested that a propulsion problem may have caused the vessel to enter the lock at excessive speed.
AKACIA trades between North and Baltic Sea ports. Her next port of call was to be St Petersburg.
