Date: 6th May 2014    Type: Fire  Voyage: 0090E Far East to Egypt and Europe

Reports have been received that German flag vessel HANJIN ATHENS (66278gt, built 2000) suffered a fire on board just south of the Suez Canal on 6th May 2014.

The fire was in hold no 2 and substantial damage to cargo in that hold is expected.

Professional salvors Svitzer were employed by the Shipowners. We understand that the fire has been extinguished.

The vessel’s owners have declared General Average and Albatross Adjusters Limited have been asked to collect average guarantees from cargo insurers. Cargo shippers or receivers will need to provide average bonds.

The vessel is on voyage number 0090E from ports in the Far East including Pusan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Yantian and Singapore.

The vessel was due to call at Port Said and then ports in Italy. It is likely that she is also carrying transhipment cargo to and from other ports in other countries.
