Date: September 2024 Type: Machinery Damage Voyage: China/S Korea/Japan/Americas
Reports have been received that Singaporean flag vessel X-PRESS PYXIS (73,172gt, built 2024) is being toward into Japan following stern tube failure.
The containership was on a voyage from ports in South Korea and China and was destined for the Americas.
Damage repairs will mean the vessel has to enter dry dock. All cargo on board will have to be discharged in Japan.
The cargo will then either be reloaded following completion of repairs or transhipped on board other vessels.
The owners of X-PRESS PYXIS have declared general average (GA). The insurers of the various cargoes on board will be asked to provide security before the cargoes can be delivered.
Whether or not cargo insurers will ultimately have to pay GA will depend upon the cause of the stern tube failure, something that we will investigate. It is noteworthy that the vessel was launched only a few months ago.
X-PRESS PYXIS is the latest in a spate of containership casualties during the middle months of 2024. These include cargo fires, groundings, machinery damage and missile strikes, many of which have led to claims being made against cargo insurers.
Several recent casualties have involved nearly new vessels, like X-PRESS PYXIS. It remains to be seen how serious the impact of these recent casualties will be on what had been improving market conditions for marine insurers.
We are assisting cargo insurers with claims arising from these recent casualties.
