Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel CMA CGM BELEM (114,000gt, built 2024) lost 99 containers overboard in heavy weather last week.
The vessel, which has a capacity of 13,000 TEU, had only recently been launched from the Hudong Zhonghua shipyard in China.
The cargoes were lost on Thursday last week whilst the vessel was off Richards Bay. Prior to this CMA CMA BELEM had called in Singapore, Shekou, Meishan, Yangshan and Qianwan.
The South African authorities have asked sailing vessels and the public to be alert to the possibility of encountering floating containers in the area.
The incident follows the loss of several containers from another CMA CGM operated vessel, CMA CGM BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, last month.
