Date: 11 August 2024   Type: Fire   Voyage: Malaysia/Singapore/Sri Lanka

Reports have been received that Portuguese flag vessel MSC CAPETOWN III (28,911gt, built 2006) suffered a fire and explosion on board last week whilst berthed at the JCT Terminal in Colombo.

The fire was brought under control by local firefighting teams and no injuries have been reported. But around 160 containers were damaged, as the vessel itself.

The fire broke out during cargo operations and was in the area of hatch numbers 41/43, adjacent to the bridge and accommodation spaces.

The vessel remains at Colombo and the damage containers have been discharged ashore.

Prior to this incident MSC CAPETOWN III had called at Singapore and Penang. The vessel usually operates in the Indian Ocean, including ports in East Africa, but is likely to be carrying transhipment cargoes for other destinations as well.

As well as cargo damage, it is possible that cargo insurers involved will be presented with claims for general average contributions. If you are involved as cargo insurers and require assistance, please do let us know as we are ready to assist. We also have cargo surveyors in the port.
