Reports have been received that Panamanian flag vessel ULTRA GALAXY (10,021gt built 2008) has been abandoned by its crew after developing a list yesterday off the coast of South Africa.
The crew of 18 Filipinos have been rescued from a lift raft by a fishing vessel, which responded to distress calls, and have been taken to St Helena Bay.
ULTRA GALAXY, a general cargo vessel, got into difficulty yesterday in heavy seas off the western cape. Two tugs were sent to the scene today but have been unable to locate the vessel so far.
Prior to this incident the vessel had been at anchor off Walvis Bay, Namibia having previously sailed for Malaga, Spain on 13 June 2024.
