Reports have been received that Maltese flag vessel CMA CGM RABELAIS (72,884gt, built 2010) has suffered an explosion and fire on board today whilst off Sabang, Indonesia.

Vessels in the vicinity have been asked to keep a look out and assist if necessary.

The extent of cargo damage is unknown at present.

Prior to this incident the container vessel had sailed from Singapore on 05 April 2022 and before that from Nansha on 31 March 2022 and Shanghai on 26 March 2022.

CMA CGM RABELAIS’ next scheduled ports of call were to be Jawaharal Nehru and Mundra.

As well as damage to the cargo, it is possible that claims for salvage and general average will arise as a result of this incident.
